I have an error saying that my spouse has already been claimed on another return.
If your error indicates that a dependent SSN that you are attempting to claim on your return has already been used as a Secondary (spouse) SSN on an accepted return. Or the secondary (spouse) SSN was previously used as a dependent SSN or qualifying SSN for EIC on an accepted return. Please first verify the information you entered for this individual to ensure the last name, social security number, and date of birth were all entered correctly, as that is a very common cause of this error.
How to correct this error:
From our homepage, click on sign in to log into your account. Select the current return that is rejected.
Next, select the My Info tab and scroll down to the Dependent's information. Select to revisit to make any necessary corrections to your dependent entries (If SSN is incorrect, select to delete the dependent then "add a new" to enter correct information). Or select the Filing Status to revisit and make a correction to your secondary (spouse) entries.
The secondary SSN cannot be listed as a dependent or a qualifying person for credits on another return.
Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit. If you continue to get this error even after verifying your information, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040 for further information or print and mail your return to file it. Remember to mail in copies of all income statements (w2, 1099, etc).
*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
