I have an error on the spouse's date of birth.
If you have an error that indicates your Spouse's date of birth does not match the IRS records, it is because the IRS uses the first four letters of the last name to verify the date of birth. Please first verify the information you entered for this individual to ensure it was entered correctly, as that is a very common cause of this error. Even if the name on your social security card does not match your W2 forms, you must use the last name on the SS card to file your return, even on a joint return.
How to correct this error:
From our homepage, click on sign in to log in and access your account. Select the current return that is rejected.
Next, on the My Info tab, select the Filing Status and then save and continue to the spouse information entry screen to correct this error. If you have entered your spouse's name and date of birth correctly you will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 as they are the record keepers for the IRS. If they have made an error on the date of birth, you can use the one they show to efile this year.
This error may go undetected when you file by paper - or even electronically through a paid preparer, but is caught when you file online because it acts as a signature. An error like this may cause you problems down the road, so it is important to correct it now.
The SSA may inform you that it takes 1-3 weeks for corrections to be entered into their database. However, it has been our experience that the timeframe is unpredictable. Thus, it may be in your best interest to paper file this year, as well as contacting the Social Security Administration (who will in turn contact the IRS).
Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and re-submit.
*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted
