I have an error with my date of birth.

If your error indicates that your date of birth does not match the IRS records it is because the IRS uses the first four letters of your last name to verify your date of birth. Please first verify the information you entered to ensure it was entered correctly and matches your SS card, as that is a very common cause of this error.  Even if it does not match the name on your W2 forms, you will still have to file with the last name on your SS card.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage, click on sign in to log in and access your account.  Select the current rejected return.

Next, select the My Info tab and go to the primary taxpayer information, then edit at your name to correct this error. If you have entered your name and date of birth correctly you will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 as they are the record keepers for the IRS.

This error may go undetected when you file by paper or even electronically through a paid preparer, but is caught when you file online because it acts as a signature. An error like this may cause you problems down the road, so it is important to correct it now.

The SSA may inform you that it takes 6-8 weeks for corrections to be entered into their database. However, it has been our experience that the timeframe is unpredictable. Thus, it may be in your best interest to paper file this year, as well as contacting the Social Security Administration (who will in turn contact the IRS).

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
