Problems with the name, social security number, or date of birth.

Problems with the name, SSN, or date of birth.

The last name and SSN do not match the IRS records. The IRS uses the first four letters of your last name to verify your SSN. The name and SSN must be entered exactly as it appears on the social security card for all persons listed on the return.

There is most often a typo or transposed letter or number.  If you will pull out your SS cards and compare, you can often catch the error.    Another possible cause is when someone is newly married and filing a joint return with their spouse but have not changed their name on their SS card yet.  Even if your W2 forms are in your new name, you will file the return (even a joint return) with the last name on your SS card.

How to correct this error:

From our homepage,  click on sign in to access your account.  Select the current return that is rejected.

Next, select the "My Info" tab to review the primary, spouse, and dependent social security numbers to see which is typed incorrectly. If all are entered correctly, you will need to contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 as they are the record keepers for the IRS. You will need to find out what data they have on file for you and will need to use this data in order to e-file or get the issue corrected with them. Please consider that if the year of birth turns out to be the issue, and it is significantly incorrect you will need to paperfile as this could affect credits, etc.

Once you have made your correction you will then save and continue to the end of your return and resubmit.

*We strongly recommend checking the status of your return in 24-48 hours using the Login to My Income Tax Return link to verify that your return has been accepted.
